Then Sings My Soul by Robert J. Morgan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I received a copy of Then Sings My Soul for free through BookSneeze simply by agreeing to provide a review upon reading it. I’m glad that I requested this book! I’ve already used some of the stories I learned from this book in my ministry.
Then Sings My Soul is all about hymns. Not only does it tell the stories behind some of the most beloved hymns ever written, but the book itself is a kind of hymnal. Along with every hymn reflected on is the sheet music for that hymn! So not only does the book provide much inspiring information, but it also can be used in one’s devotional time with the Lord.
Nevertheless, I did find that the stories got a little repetitive after awhile. The stories often centered on the authors of the hymns, and since many hymns were written by the same authors, many of the stories overlapped or were even simply retold. That I found this somewhat disappointing at all is probably more my own fault than the fault of the author. It’s not really the type of book that one would typically read from start to finish. It’s to be used sporadically in order to provide the history of a hymn sung during a church gathering. Though all of this could have been solved if the stories were more about the hymns rather than the authors.
I’ve passed this book along to the worship leader of my church and hope that she finds it as useful as I have. I’d recommend this book to anyone who appreciates the hymns from the last two centuries. What a beautiful resource!
